Writing?

Writing in English it’s been the hardest thing during the school year.

Don’t get me wrong, speaking is hard too but writing an essay or a paragraph is harder.

I remember the first time I wrote my first paragraph in English, it didn’t go as I was expecting. I made many many errors and I had to redo it a couple of times, but at the end I completed the assignment. What helped me, and still does, is http://www.wordreference.com/ : I can translate any word and have the word translated right away.

The other problem is thinking in Italian and writing in English, the grammar structure is completely different and trying to translate simultaneously takes a lot of mental energy. For instance, the first week of school was a constant headache because my brain was trying to switch language and at the end it did.

Right now, with 2 full months left I can say that one of my goal has been reached: I usually can write without using any translation method even though I still make some mistakes. I feel more confident now in my abilities then I was at the beginning of the year, and the best feeling is that now I can say that I know almost perfectly the most spoken language of the world.

  1. Miranda, how amazing it is that you have learned how to write in English so well. It is surely not an easy language to lear, especially with all of our crazy rules and exceptions. You mentioned the difference between the grammatical structure of English and Italian, do you have any examples as to how they are different? Your hard work inspires me! Writing in English is hard for natural-born speakers to do well, I’m definitely still learning myself. I take Spanish in the high school and I am trying to tackle the grammar of Spanish which is also very different from English. Do you know if the Spanish language and Italian are similar? There’s an app called Photo Translator that directly translates anything that you take a picture of. Take a look! https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photo-translator-free/id478334807?mt=8
